In an increasingly climate-conscious world, Comms8 has stepped up to the plate. We are thrilled to announce our commitment to the 'Pledge to Net Zero' initiative starting in March of this year. This global initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within participating organizations. By joining this pledge, we stand united with other environmentally-forward companies, acknowledging the urgent need to actively counteract the impacts of climate change.

In 2022, the UK made notable strides towards a greener future. According to the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, there was a commendable 2.4% reduction in Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to 2021 figures. However, to reach the ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, these reductions must become an annual norm over the next three decades. A closer examination, as highlighted by Carbonbrief, reveals the sectors that require urgent attention—buildings, transport, industry, and agriculture—to drive the nation closer to its net-zero aspirations. While the recent decline in emissions marks a step in the right direction, the journey ahead remains extensive and demanding.

Setting Our Course: Comms8’s Net Zero Commitment

Recent research from the Carbon Trust revealed that companies, particularly those in the private sector, have a critical role to play in addressing global climate change. Organisations, regardless of their size, play a significant role in global greenhouse gas emissions. Recognizing this, their individual and collective efforts to reduce their carbon footprint hold immense potential for driving substantial change. Embarking on this pivotal journey towards net zero emissions, Comms8 has established three primary commitments:

  1. Embrace the Science Based Targets’ 1.5°C climate change scenario by implementing necessary strategies to significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

  2. Uphold transparency by publicly reporting our greenhouse gas emissions and our progress against our targets annually.

  3. Foster a culture of knowledge and awareness by publishing at least one piece of thought-leadership or research each year that focuses on practical steps towards achieving an economy that aligns with climate science and supports net zero carbon.

In our pursuit of these ambitious goals, we're harnessing innovative solutions to reduce our carbon footprint. This involves tapping into renewable energy sources, pioneering advanced recycling and reuse methods, and intensifying our efforts to raise public awareness about the vital role of sustainable business practices.

We're proud to unveil significant changes in our operational processes, in line with our commitment:

  1. Eco-friendly Transportation: We've transitioned from petrol and diesel vehicles to sustainable electric alternatives. Additionally, we've minimized flight travel, prioritizing trains and other environmentally-friendly travel methods where feasible.

  2. Sustainable Office Practices: We've drastically reduced plastic and single-use materials in both our office and the events we organize.

  3. Partnering with Purpose: We actively choose suppliers and partners who resonate with our commitment to sustainability."

Achieving Net Zero: Learning from Leaders

In a recent webinar titled "Pledge to Net Zero: Case Studies," hosted by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IMEA), we were privy to insights from several leading participants of the Pledge to Net Zero initiative. These industry frontrunners shared their journeys, shedding light on their strategies to reduce emissions and the challenges they encountered along the way. A standout presentation by Graeme Hall of Brandon Medical emphasised the synergy between financial prudence and environmental responsibility. Hall proposed an intriguing approach: by making decisions that yield the most significant financial benefits, organizations can redirect some of those savings to fund initiatives with smaller financial returns but higher CO2 reduction impact.

Brandon Medical's approach to a building constructed in the 1970s showcased this balance:

  1. Enhanced Energy Efficiency: By improving insulation and draft-proofing in their operational facilities, they significantly curtailed energy waste.

  2. Modern Lighting: Transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting combined with advanced lighting controls made a substantial difference.

  3. Heating Upgrades: The introduction of modern, efficient gas heaters and boilers, coupled with the incorporation of sensors and advanced building management systems, further reduced their carbon footprint.

  4. Eco-friendly Transportation: They made a deliberate shift from petrol and diesel vehicles to more sustainable electric alternatives.

  5. Harnessing Solar Power: The installation of solar photovoltaics not only reduced their reliance on traditional energy sources but also demonstrated a commitment to renewable energy.

Brandon Medical's strategy underscores the delicate balance between operational efficiency and environmental stewardship, offering a blueprint for businesses looking to smartly navigate their journey to net zero.

Going the Extra Mile: Our Green Initiatives

To put our words into action, Comms8 has launched a meaningful collaboration with Evergreen, a global tree-planting initiative. We are delighted to pledge part of our profits to planting trees around the globe. Every collaboration with our clients now carries a deeper dimension. Their marketing investments with Comms8 are not just about business growth, but also about nurturing our planet. Each project we undertake is intertwined with a commitment to rejuvenate our environment. With satellite monitoring of the planting process, we are able to witness firsthand the positive environmental impact of our contributions. To date, Comms8 has facilitated the planting of trees through Evertreen, benefiting ecosystems across seven countries. Our unique forest code is 707. When you insert this code at checkout, you have the opportunity to gift trees to this very forest.

Invitation to Act: A Sustainable Future Awaits

Tackling climate change is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the boundaries of individual organisations. From setting goals, and making commitments, to really making change, every step counts and matters. We invite you, our clients, partners, and peers, to join Comms8 on this crucial journey towards sustainability. Together, we can create a future that is not only greener and healthier but also sustainable and resilient for generations to come.
